“For years, our village has been known for receiving relief food. Today, we are working to become known for something different—women who transformed their own future.”

In the heart of Kijiwetanga lies Msoloni Airport Village, a community whose name carries a painful history. The village became known as “Msoloni Airport” because it served as the distribution point for relief food whenever humanitarian assistance arrived. Over the years, many families sold their land in an effort to survive, leaving generations trapped in poverty and dependent on aid.

But the women of this village have decided that this story must change.

In January 2026, a group of determined mothers came together to form the Jibidishe Kwa Maendeleo Msoloni Self Help Group. Guided by their motto, “Jitahidi.. Jishirikishe.. Jibadilishe.. Jifanikishe”, they are building a future rooted in effort, unity, transformation, and success. Their vision is simple yet powerful—to create sustainable livelihoods, educate their children, and build opportunities that will enable their families to thrive without depending on relief assistance.

Although most members earn a living through casual farm work on other people’s land, they made a remarkable commitment. Every week, each member contributes KSh 50 to a community savings fund. The pooled contribution is given to one member on a rotational basis to help pay school fees, buy food, meet medical expenses, or address other urgent household needs.

For these women, every contribution represents a sacrifice, but also an investment in hope.

Their determination attracted the attention of Farina Foundation, whose community facilitator introduced the group to the importance of formal registration and organizational development. With technical support from the Farina Foundation, the women completed the registration process through the Social Services Office in Malindi and are now awaiting their registration certificate.

Registration marks the beginning of a much bigger dream.

Rather than relying on donations for daily survival, the group has chosen to establish a group-owned income-generating enterprise. After assessing local needs, they identified a business opportunity with consistent demand but little local supply: the hiring of plastic chairs for weddings, funerals, church functions, community meetings, and other events.

Their goal is to purchase 100 plastic chairs, creating a reliable source of income that will benefit all members. As the business grows, they plan to reinvest the profits by purchasing additional event equipment, including large cooking pots and serving trays, enabling them to offer more comprehensive hiring services while creating an even stronger financial foundation for the group.

This is not a request for charity.

It is an invitation to invest in a community of hardworking women who have already demonstrated commitment, unity, and accountability. They are not waiting for change—they are creating it. What they need is a partner willing to help them take the next step.
