As the mentorship session wound down, a male student approached one of our team members and, half-joking, asked if he could have the hat off his head. When asked why, he explained something we hadn’t fully considered: that programmes like ours — rightly focused on empowering girls — can leave boys feeling invisible. He said it with a smile, joking that “the sun wasn’t friendly” on his long walk home. But underneath the humour was a real and honest truth: recognition matters to everyone, and right now, the boys of Shomela Senior School feel like an afterthought in their own community’s story.
