Help Dickson Stay in School: A Bright Future Should Not Be Cut Short by School Fees

At just 14 years old, Dickson Ofusa has already demonstrated exceptional determination and academic excellence despite facing significant hardship.

 

Dickson comes from Mkenge C Village in Kilifi North. He is the third born of four children being raised by his widowed mother after the loss of his father in 2021. To provide for her family, his mother depends on casual jobs that barely earn enough to meet their daily needs, making it impossible to keep up with the cost of secondary education.

 

Despite these challenges, Dickson has never allowed his circumstances to define his future.

 

After completing his Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) at Children of the Rising Sun (CRS) Comprehensive School, he scored an outstanding 59 out of 72 points. His excellent performance earned him admission to Kenyatta High School, Mwatate—a prestigious National School—where he is pursuing the STEM pathway, bringing him one step closer to his dream of becoming an engineer.

 

Recognising his potential, Farina Foundation helped Dickson apply for several scholarship opportunities. Although he successfully reached the vetting stage, he was unfortunately not awarded any of the scholarships.

 

Determined not to let this opportunity slip away, Farina Foundation mobilised support from generous well-wishers to help him purchase the most essential items needed to report to school. Thanks to their kindness, Dickson was able to join school, although only a few days before the mid-term break.

 

Many would expect a student who joined school late to struggle academically.

 

Dickson proved otherwise.

 

Despite the late admission, he delivered an exceptional performance in his Term One examinations, achieving:

• English: 60% (ME2 – 5 points)
• Kiswahili: 78% (EE2 – 7 points)
• Core Mathematics: 66% (ME1 – 6 points)
• Community Service Learning: 75% (EE2 – 7 points)
• Biology: 78% (EE2 – 7 points)
• Physics: 82% (EE2 – 7 points)
• Chemistry: 90% (EE1 – 8 points)

He attained 529 out of 700 marks, translating to 47 out of 56 points with an overall performance of EE2 (Exceeds Expectations).

 

These results demonstrate that Dickson has both the ability and the determination to excel when given the opportunity.

 

Today, however, his education remains uncertain because of outstanding school fees.
