“Education gave me hope when life offered very little. Today, I only need one more helping hand to keep that hope alive.”

My name is Nafisa Mnyazi Mbaji, a 21-year-old young woman from Mawe Mabomu Village, Mwawesa Ward, Rabai Sub-County, Kilifi County. I am the second-born in a family of four. My siblings and I were raised by my elderly grandmother and our single mother, who survives through casual jobs. Despite her tireless efforts, her income has never been enough to meet even our family’s basic needs. Growing up, I believed education would be my path to a better future—not only for myself, but also for my family.

I began my secondary education at Shomela Secondary School as a boarding student. Unfortunately, financial hardship forced me to drop out in Form Two after my school fee arrears rose to KSh 23,000. My mother was unable to raise the money. Refusing to give up, I transferred to Chiferi Secondary School near our home as a day scholar. Because I had missed so much learning while frequently staying out of school due to unpaid fees, I repeated Form Two and continued my studies under very difficult circumstances.

In 2024, I sat my KCSE examinations and earned a C-, an achievement I am proud of considering the many challenges I faced along the way. My dream has always been to work in healthcare and serve my community. I had hoped to study nursing, but my KCSE grade did not meet the entry requirements. For a while, it felt as though my dream had come to an end. Determined not to lose hope, I moved to Mombasa and worked as a house help for one year and three months, saving every little coin I could.

Then something unexpected happened. A former teacher from Shomela Secondary School, who had continued to follow my journey, reached out and encouraged me to apply through KUCCPS. By God’s grace, I was offered admission to Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) – Mombasa Campus to pursue a Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology.

With my savings, together with support from my former teacher and a few generous well-wishers, I managed to report to college in March. Although I could only pay part of the required fees, the college allowed me to begin my studies.

Today, I am at another crossroads. Our end-of-semester qualifying examinations begin on Monday, 13th July, and students with outstanding fee balances will not be allowed into the examination rooms. I currently have an outstanding fee balance of KSh 11,200. I have worked too hard, overcome too many obstacles, and come too far to have my education interrupted once again because of school fees. I am humbly appealing to kind-hearted individuals, friends, organizations, and anyone who believes in the power of education to help me clear my outstanding balance so that I can sit for my examinations and continue pursuing my dream of building a career in healthcare.

Your support will not only help me take my exams—it will help change the future of an entire family and enable me one day to serve countless patients in need.
