“Every child carries inherent potential. Yet across rural communities, countless gifted young people remain unseen—not because they lack talent, but because they lack opportunity. Sometimes all it takes to change a child’s future is one person who notices, believes, and chooses to invest in that potential.”
A Journey to the Heart of Rural Kilifi
On Thursday, 9th July 2026, the Farina Foundation team travelled nearly 40 kilometres from Malindi to Shomela Senior School, a mixed day and boarding school tucked away in the rural interior of Magarini Sub-county, Kilifi County.
The journey itself tells a story. After crossing the Sabaki Bridge and leaving the tarmac road behind, kilometres of murram road lead to an open school with no perimeter fence or gate. Yet beyond its modest surroundings lies something far more valuable than infrastructure—a community of resilient young people determined to build a better future through education.
Our mission that day was simple: to mentor students, encourage them to dream beyond their circumstances, and distribute sanitary towels to support girls’ menstrual dignity.
By the end of the visit, however, we left with a lesson of our own.
“What About Us?”
As the mentorship session came to a close, several boys approached us with smiles on their faces.
They jokingly asked,
“What gifts have you brought for us? The sun hasn’t been friendly to us either.”
Everyone laughed.
But behind the humour was a heartfelt message.
The boys explained that while they appreciated the support given to girls, they too faced challenges that often went unnoticed. As we listened, we began to understand the realities many of these boys live with every day.
They were not asking to take anything away from the girls.
They were simply asking to be seen.
Some wear torn school sweaters because their families cannot afford replacements. Others have no school shoes. Many walk seven kilometres to school and another seven kilometres back home every day, believing that education is their pathway to a brighter future.
Their request was not for luxury.
It was for recognition.
Hidden Champions in an Under-Resourced School
As we learned more about the school, another inspiring story emerged.
Despite having limited sports equipment and training resources, Shomela Senior School continues to compete with remarkable determination.
During this year’s inter-school competitions:
- The football and volleyball teams reached the Sub-county Level, finishing 8th out of 31 schools in Magarini Sub-county.
- Both the boys’ and girls’ scrabble teams finished 2nd, defeating 13 schools to qualify and represent Magarini Sub-county at the County Championships.
These achievements become even more remarkable when you consider the challenges they face.
The football and volleyball teams lack basic playing equipment such as football boots, socks and shin guards. Some students train barefoot because they do not own football boots. During competitions, they borrow boots from well-wishers. Unfortunately, unfamiliar boots sometimes cause painful blisters, forcing some players to compete in discomfort. Yet despite these obstacles, they continue to represent their school with determination, resilience and pride. No child should have to choose between playing through pain and giving up on a dream.
The scrabble teams have only one scrabble board for the entire school.

An entire county-level team.
Imagine preparing champions with only that.
For a school with limited resources, these achievements are extraordinary. They demonstrate that talent exists everywhere—even where opportunity is limited.
And talent at Shomela extends beyond the sports field. It lives in classrooms, science lessons, leadership opportunities, creative arts, and in every student who dares to dream despite difficult circumstances.
It raises an important question:
How many gifted athletes, leaders, innovators, teachers, engineers, entrepreneurs and professionals are sitting in rural classrooms today, waiting for someone to notice their potential?
“Potential exists everywhere. Opportunity does not. Together, we can bridge that gap.”
Who Will Discover Their Potential?
Leaving Shomela, one question stayed with us:
Who will discover the potential in these boys and girls?
History reminds us that extraordinary journeys often begin when one person chooses to believe.
Football legend Lionel Messi was encouraged by his grandmother, Celia Oliveira Cuccittini, who recognised his passion long before the rest of the world did. She became his greatest supporter, nurturing his dream despite humble beginnings. Although she did not live to see him lift the FIFA World Cup, her belief helped shape one of football’s greatest players.
Another inspiring example is Lamine Yamal, who grew up in humble circumstances. His extraordinary talent, first displayed on neighbourhood streets, was recognised early and nurtured through opportunities that allowed him to develop into one of football’s brightest young stars.
These stories remind us that talent alone is not enough.
Potential needs opportunity.
Dreams need someone willing to invest in them.
Perhaps among the students of Shomela Senior School sits the next engineer, teacher, doctor, entrepreneur, athlete, scientist or national leader.
The difference between unrealised potential and extraordinary success is often one person—or one community—choosing to believe.
The only question is whether someone will give them the chance.
Looking Beyond Dignity Packs
Our visit began with an effort to support girls through menstrual dignity.
It ended by revealing another important need that deserves our attention alongside menstrual dignity.
While girls face unique barriers that require targeted support, our conversations reminded us that many boys are also navigating silent struggles that often go unnoticed.
Every child deserves to feel valued, supported and hopeful about the future.
Many students require basic school necessities such as sweaters, shoes and learning materials.
The school’s sports teams need equipment to compete on equal footing with other schools.
The scrabble club needs additional boards to train more students.
These are not extravagant requests.
They are simple investments that can unlock extraordinary potential.
