Every family deserves the chance to earn a living with dignity. We invite you to become part of one family’s journey from crisis to self-reliance. This is the story of a father we will call Dume, a resident of a village near Malindi and the sole breadwinner for his family of twelve children. For years, Dume worked tirelessly tapping coconut palm wine (mnazi), a physically demanding job that enabled him to provide food, school fees, and other basic needs for his family. Like many informal workers, his income depended entirely on his physical strength.
Then, in February this year, tragedy struck.
While at work, Dume fell and fractured his right shoulder. Unable to afford medical treatment, he endured months of pain at home while completely unable to work. With no savings or health insurance, the family’s only source of income disappeared overnight.
In late May, thanks to the generosity of a few well-wishers, KSh 3,000 was raised to take him to Malindi Hospital. An X-ray confirmed that although the fracture had begun to heal, the injury had aggravated a previous fracture in the same shoulder, resulting in osteoarthritis. The diagnosis meant that Dume could no longer return to the only occupation he had known for years.
Today, his wife has become the family’s only source of income. She works as a casual farm labourer whenever work is available, earning between KSh 200 and KSh 300 a day—an amount that is barely enough to feed such a large family, let alone meet other essential needs.
Faced with this reality, we asked ourselves an important question:
Should we simply provide temporary relief, or should we help this family rebuild a sustainable livelihood?
At Farina Foundation, we believe lasting change comes from creating opportunities, not dependence.
That is why we are partnering with Dume’s family to establish a small-scale poultry farming enterprise that can generate a reliable income for years to come. Instead of a one-time donation that is quickly exhausted, this project will equip the family with a sustainable way to provide for themselves. Our goal is to construct a simple poultry house using locally available materials and stock it with 20 broiler chicks. The poultry house has been carefully designed to support cyclical production, allowing the family to maintain continuous income as they grow and sell successive batches of chickens.
This blog will document every step of the journey—from construction and stocking the poultry house to the family’s first harvest and the long-term impact on their lives.
We are pleased to share that the journey has already begun. Through the kindness of early supporters, the poles required for construction were purchased during the last week of June and the first week of July, marking the first milestone toward making this dream a reality.
However, there is still much to be done.
