We start to share the journey towards Economic Empowerment of a man we will call by one name Dume. He is from a village near Malindi. He used to support his twelve children by tapping coconut palm wine (Mnazi), unfortunately in February this year he fractured his right shoulder after a fall. This injury left him unable to work for three months. Due to financial constraints, he couldn’t seek medical attention and had to endure the pain at home. In late May, with the help of well-wishers they managed to raise Ksh. 3,000, he was taken to Malindi Hospital. An X-ray showed the fracture was healing, but because the same arm had previously fractured, he has developed osteoarthritis, making him permanently unable to continue his palmwine tapping profession. The family is now in a severe financial crisis as he was the main provider.
His wife now does menial farm jobs, earning between 200 and 300 shillings a day, which can’t even cover a single day’s meals for the family. Instead of giving him meals for a day or two, we believe setting up a sustainable economic generation activity will enable him continue to fend for his family. The journey to their economic empowerment will be shared in this blog. Target of fundraising is to set up a poultry farming enterprise for him to be able to meet his families basic needs by setting up a simple poultry house using local materials to rear 20 broiler chicks and do cycle production. Below is a picture of the floor layout showing partitions to enable cycle production; second photo shows how we envision the poultry house will look like once complete; next is the estimated budget for constructing the poultry house and the last photo is for the poles bought by week 1 of July.
The last week of June and by first day of July we were able to get the poles to be used in the construction.
