At just 14 years old, Dickson Ofusa is proving that determination, hard work, and resilience can overcome even the toughest circumstances—provided someone is willing to open the door of opportunity. Dickson comes from Mkenge C Village in Kilifi North. He is the third-born in a family of four children being raised by their widowed mother following the loss of their father in 2021. Since then, life has been a daily struggle. His mother survives on irregular casual jobs that barely provide enough for food, leaving little or nothing for secondary school fees.

Yet, despite these hardships, Dickson has never allowed poverty to define his future.

After completing the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) at Children of the Rising Sun (CRS) Comprehensive School, he scored an impressive 59 out of 72 points, earning admission to Kenyatta High School, Mwatate, a National School. He enrolled in the STEM pathway, taking a significant step toward his lifelong dream of becoming an engineer.

Recognizing his remarkable academic potential, Farina Foundation supported Dickson in applying for several scholarship opportunities. Although he progressed to the final vetting stages, he was unfortunately not selected.

For many families, that would have marked the end of the journey.

Instead, it became the beginning of a community coming together.

Farina Foundation reached out to compassionate well-wishers, who generously contributed toward the essential school requirements Dickson needed to report to school. Because of their kindness, he was able to join Kenyatta High School—albeit a few days before the mid-term break.

Despite joining later than his classmates, Dickson refused to be discouraged.

His first-term results speak for themselves:

  • English – 60%
  • Kiswahili – 78%
  • Core Mathematics – 66%
  • Community Service Learning – 75%
  • Biology – 78%
  • Physics – 82%
  • Chemistry – 90%

Overall, Dickson scored 529 out of 700 marks, translating to 47 out of 56 points and an overall rating of EE2 (Exceeds Expectations).

These outstanding results are a powerful reminder that when vulnerable children are given an opportunity, they can excel beyond expectations.

Another Challenge—and Another Victory

Just as Dickson was settling into school life, another obstacle emerged.

In May, he was sent home because of KSh 28,000 in unpaid school fees. He remained out of school for three weeks, missing valuable lessons as Farina Foundation worked tirelessly to mobilize support through community fundraising and the sale of merchandise.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters, Dickson returned to school and is now completing his second term. He is preparing for his end-of-term examinations before the school closes on 31st July.

This is remarkable progress—but the journey is not over.

Dickson still has an outstanding second-term fee balance of KSh 3,000. In addition, he needs KSh 7,282 for his third-term fees, which must be paid by 31st August to ensure he reports back to school without interruption.
