A Dream Deferred, Not Denied: Maxwell’s Journey to University

My name is Maxwell Nasong’o, and I am the firstborn in a family of four.

In 2021, while I was in Form Three, my father passed away. Losing him was one of the most difficult moments in my life. Beyond the emotional pain, my family suddenly faced serious financial challenges, and I was uncertain whether I would be able to complete my secondary education.

Thankfully, through the kindness of well-wishers, I was able to remain in school. Despite the challenges, I worked hard and successfully completed my KCSE, earning a mean grade of C+.

Although I had qualified for university, I did not know what to do next. Like many students from vulnerable families, I lacked the guidance and support needed to navigate the university application process.

That is when Farina Foundation came into my life.

The Foundation guided me through the KUCCPS application process, and I was successfully admitted to Alupe University to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Community Development—a course that aligns with my passion for serving others and uplifting communities.

Farina Foundation also supported me in applying for HELB funding. However, when the release of the funds was delayed, I faced another difficult challenge. I was unable to report to the university as scheduled.

Instead of giving up, the Foundation advised me to apply for a one-year deferment of my admission while waiting for the HELB loan to be processed. Following their guidance, I submitted the request, and it was approved.

The following year, after receiving my HELB funding under Tier One, I finally reported to Alupe University and began pursuing the dream I had almost lost.

Today, I am proud to have successfully completed my second year of study.

Looking back, I realise that Farina Foundation did much more than help me complete application forms. They walked with me during one of the most uncertain seasons of my life, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical support that gave me the confidence to keep moving forward.

I sincerely appreciate Farina Foundation for believing in me when I needed it most. Their commitment to empowering vulnerable students has made a lasting difference in my life, and I will always be grateful.

I remain committed to working hard, completing my degree, and using the knowledge and skills I gain to serve my community and create opportunities for others, just as others created an opportunity for me.
