A New Beginning Takes Shape

We are pleased to share the latest progress on Dume’s Poultry Farming Project, an initiative designed to help his family rebuild a sustainable livelihood after the injury that left him unable to continue climbing coconut trees to tap palm wine (mnazi).

Following the generosity of our supporters, the project has now entered its implementation phase.

Preparing for the Poultry House

Significant progress has been made in preparing materials for the construction of the poultry house.

By 12th July, all the main structural poles required for the poultry house had been successfully gathered and transported to Dume’s homestead. This marks an important milestone in laying the foundation for construction.

Following this, the family began the next stage of preparation by cutting fitos (wall materials) needed for the structure. Out of the required 500 fitos, they have so far managed to cut 137 pieces, demonstrating strong commitment and steady progress despite limited resources. The progress is slow since the two older sons only work weekends when they are not in school.

At present, 70 fitos are already available at the homestead, ready for use when construction starts.

Although Dume continues to recover from his shoulder injury, he remains actively involved in supervising the work, while family members assist with the physical tasks on weekends.

Funding Challenges Affecting Progress

While material preparation is ongoing, the project is currently facing a significant funding gap that is slowing down overall progress.

So far, we have raised KES 6,000 out of the required KES 25,000 needed for poultry house construction.

In addition, once the structure is complete, we will also require:

  • KES 5,000 for feeders and drinkers
  • KES 30,000 for chicks, vaccines, vitamins, sawdust, and poultry feed

This brings the total remaining funding requirement to ensure full project completion and successful start-up of production.

Why Timely Funding Is Important

The project team is aiming to complete procurement of all required materials before full construction begins. This is important because:

  • It will allow construction to proceed without interruptions.
  • It will ensure all materials are available when needed.
  • It will enable the involvement of Dume’s older children in construction work once schools close in August.

Having all materials in place will make it possible to complete the poultry house efficiently during the school holiday period, when family labour is fully available.

However, at the current pace of funding, the project is at risk of falling behind schedule.

Looking Ahead

The goal of this project is to establish a sustainable poultry enterprise that can provide regular income and improve household food security for Dume’s family.

By raising broiler chickens in production cycles, the family will be able to generate income while building practical skills in livestock management, business planning, and financial independence.

With timely support, this project has the potential to move quickly from preparation into full production.
